“Don’t Fix It if It Ain’t Broke”—How This Can Cost You in the Long Run

It’s an old adage and it seems to make sense: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” It’s good advice for many things in life. But it doesn’t really apply to machines and appliances, i.e. things that can actually break. The truth is that something can continue to work without breaking down, but still need repairs. If you go with this philosophy when it comes to your air conditioning system, you’ll end up paying for it in the long run… both in comfort and in money.

The Nature of Air Conditioning Malfunctions

If there’s cool air coming from the vents in your house when the air conditioner is on, then the air conditioner is working, right? No, not necessarily. An air conditioner can continue to provide its basic cooling function even when many things are wrong with it. These problems include leaking refrigerant, worn-down motor bearings, dirty indoor and outdoor coils, and a clogged air filter. If these problems are left without attention, they will begin to make the air conditioner inefficient. Your bills will start to increase as the AC strains harder to do the job expected of it.

But even worse than the cost in running a system with malfunctions is the risk that the malfunctions will worsen and spread. Most issues in air conditioning systems are progressive, which means they start to trigger problems in other components, leading to a chain reaction where multiple components will fail at the same time. Instead of a simple, inexpensive repair, you’ll find yourself with a completely non-operational air conditioner that will need complex and expensive repairs. In the worst-case scenario, the whole AC may need to be replaced.

If you notice any odd behavior with your AC, even if it doesn’t seem to affect its cooling abilities, contact our AC repair professionals right away. The sooner you fix it, the less likely that it will break. (Now that’s a better adage!)
